What to Expect

When:

• Fall Term Auditions: These are held each May (for example, auditions for Fall 2025 will take place in May 2025).

• Mid-Year Auditions (for Term 3/4 Choirs): Held each January.

Exact dates will be announced in late April (for May auditions) and December (for January auditions) 

If you already know you’re interested in singing in choir next school year, we strongly recommend that you take part in the spring audition cycle (held in May). This gives you the best chance to be placed in the right choir and be part of all our exciting plans from the very beginning!

Where: Choir Room, p-126
Duration: 15 minutes

Audition Components:

• Match 1-3 notes played on the piano

• Repeat short melodies played on the piano

• Range testing (lowest note to highest note)

• Identify and sing the highest, lowest, and middle notes in a chord

• Perform the melody to “You Are My Sunshine.”

• Create a harmony

• Good vibes check (because a positive attitude makes a difference in your audition)

While this audition may seem challenging, rest assured that it is the perfect opportunity to ensure your placement in the choir where you'll thrive.

From the director: 

Something I think all students should keep in mind is that the audition is intentionally challenging, but that doesn’t mean I expect perfection. In fact, I’m much more interested in your personality, how you approach challenges, and your resilience than I am in perfect, flawless singing.

The same audition is used for all levels of choir and is designed to help place you where you’ll thrive and grow. My real expectations? That you show up with a smile, a love for singing, and a can-do attitude to do your personal best. And if you also happen to nail all the singing exercises? Well, that’s just a bonus!

What About Harmonizing?
 

Yes, you will be asked to harmonize during the audition—but don’t worry about preparing this part ahead of time. I’m not looking for a polished harmony you've practiced; I want to see how well you can use your ears in the moment to create something on the spot. This helps me understand your harmonic awareness, how you respond to challenges, and how your previous choir or music experience has shaped your musicianship.

Depending on how that goes, I may also ask you to sing the melody again while I harmonize with you, to see if you can stay steady and confident in your part—something that’s just as important in choir singing.

Callbacks:
Callbacks for A Cappella and Jazz Choir will be communicated via email. These sessions, conducted in the choir room, will take place the following week. Singers receiving callbacks will have one week to prepare and record themselves performing 1-2 choir songs assigned in the callback email. Additional details will be provided in the email.
